Best Free Image Editors 2023

If you're into design like I am, and as old as I am, you'll remember when you didn't have to rent Adobe Photoshop. And because I refuse to rent software, I've found the best alternatives available.

Offline Photo Editors

G.I.M.P.

Operating Systems: Window / Mac / Linux

Pros: Completely free. Ton's of image editing tools & strong support for layers.

Cons: Slow performance. Harder learning curve than other options. It's hard to handle the layout if you've used Photoshop for a long time. It needs a 3rd party app to convert raw camera files.

We recommend using Diolinux’s PhotoGIMP interface to make the UI more similar to Photoshop & adds Python image filters. For great detailed installation instructions visit Tom's Hardware.

Online Photo Editors

Pixlr X and Pixlr E

Pros: Completely free. Ton's of image editing tools & strong support for layers on Pixler E. Offers two versions depending on needs & users skill level. Works on any browser.

Cons: There are ads, and depending on your system & internet connection editing can be slow.

While we normally use Pixlr E, which offers features more similar to Photoshop, we also love that they have an easier option offering filters & more in Pixler X.
